    New Discussion Board coming!

    Hi everyone,

We're aiming to launch a whole new discussion board on April 11, 2007. The boards will look essentially the same, for now, but you'll see some improvements in functionality. We will be organizing the Topics a bit differently though.

You will be able to keep the same user name, however you will be asked to reset your password when you first try to log in into the new boards. Your profile will be carried over to the new boards.

The following items will not be carried over so please save them:
    - Signatures
    - Avatars
    - Private Messages
    - Friends Lists

The new boards won't have "display names" and all accounts will default to your sign-in username (which is usually the same thing). If you have a display name that's different from your user name, please PM me to let me know after the new boards are launched.

You will also have to reset any notification emails. Please make sure that your board account is associated with a valid email address. If it is not, you may not be able to access you account once we move over to the new boards.

If you have any questions, please ask me in this thread.

    Re: New Discussion Board coming!

Okay, what I said above about being able to keep the same username is mostly true. However, they will need to be adjusted slightly.

One of the functions of the new boards will be user Profile Pages, which will have "friendly URLs". This means that instead of a random number, your profile page URL will have your username in it. The only characters allowed in URLs are letters, digits, and hyphens. Spaces, punctuation, and all other special symbols are not allowed. Thus, many existing member names are not valid in URLs.

This can most easily be resolved by removing special characters and spaces. For example "Sumit (Nitin's Manager)" could be changed to "Sumit-NitinsManager" or "Sumit-Nitins-Manager" or "SumitNitinsManager".

You won't be required to do anything as far as adjusting the names. That will happen on our end once we've moved to the new boards. The default will be just to remove all spaces and special characters. If you have a special request as to how you want to format your username for the new board, please let me know, via this thread, ASAP. Just ask if any of this isn't clear.

    Thanks all.

    Hi Beverly,

Pleased to make your cyber aquaintance!!!! Great to have your navigating skills on board!

I have a suggestion. I hope it's not too late. I hope you're not getting rid of the signatures as I like them but I would like to change them if I write a new post. At the moment, if i change the signature it changes it for all the posts. I would like to be able to change my signature when I want. Maybe just for one post, and I'd like to leave the other posts alone. I found a beautiful quote the other day but I don't want to change my signature for EVERY post.

    Cheers, Rhian

    Hi there Beverly,

Great to hear about the changes. When you talk about resetting the password, do you mean, changing it, or just setting the same one up again?

    Thanks for the welcome!

Rhian, we won't be getting rid of signatures, but you will need to save yours to your hard drive, if it's not there already, and re-upload it once the new boards have launched. As far as being able to have different signatures for different posts, I'm afraid that's not possible, and is a limitation of boards in general.

Rosemary, yes, you can indeed reuse your current password. Or you can change it. It's all up to you.
