    Indian music and flamenco

We spoke together on the phone last Monday, after the London conference. It was great to talk to you about the links between flamenco and Indian classical music.

You mentioned various sources - Kathak, music of the Rajasthan gypsies (I think) and above all ... I've forgotten!!!

It was a key concept in Indian classical music, and I've forgotten it.

I'd be seriously grateful if you were to talk a bit about these topics. Particularly the one I've forgotten!

    Thanks,

    Jim

Did Jim ever find out what that key concept was, I wonder?

Last night, I was extremely fortunate enough to catch Paco Pena and Nishat Khan and friends, performing at the RFH.  I had meant to book a couple of tickets ages ago and forgot but, happened to be down there, nursing a juice and catching up on letter-writing (hey, remember snail-mail???Party!!! I can only just remember where to stick the stamp!)  when the concert was announced as being about to start.... never has Buga cleared so many stairs in so little time - had I been going up several floors and not down, it would've taken a couple of hours rather than seconds, admittedly... I digress!

Anyway, so, Paco played some flamenco, Nishat a raag and then they played flamenco music together. It was all very, very beautiful and I enjoyed every second of it but still, I just couldn't hear any obvious (to me!) connection.  Perhaps I should be listening less to the posh stuff and more to the folk music of Rajasthan for clues, because all I can hear within flamenco music are hints of moorish influences.

So ...... what is that certain something? I am at a complete loss!
