The Official Community Of Nitin Sawhney

Noticed that the advance info for London Undersound includes mention of Paul McCartney collaboration again and wondering if anybody knows any further details on their collabs.

 I know the first collaboration (which may have just been a remix although Nitin's talked of McCartney coming to his studio for it) was the very obscure 'Fluid-The Nitin Sawhney Remixes' (1999) by The Fireman but I've always been looking for more info on that as some information in the book 'The Unknown Paul McCartney-Paul McCartney and the Avant-Garde' by Ian Peel seems to suggest that Nitin was involved at an earlier stage with the album from which 'Fluid' came, the 1998 'Rushes' album.

I know that previously The Fireman had been the vehicle of McCartney and Youth with a previous album 'Strawberries Ocean Ship Forest' (1993) being more or less an 'Ambient House' thing but wondering if anything's come to light on the extent of Nitin's involvement with the second album which certainly bears his influence quite heavily?

Word on a third Fireman album in 2008 is now about and Nitin seems to be involved for at least a remix of a track on that

Heard the track.  While the track is, in typical Nitin fashion, expertly evocative of what he describes, the lyrics are typical McCartney blather.  There could be a couple errors, but I heard this at playback several times so I have most of it down:

Thanks for that. Also just read a bit from Nitin talking about the track (by the way if anybody knows where he said this, let us know because none of the reporting media have atttributed the quote to an interview source).

Interestingly while the lyrics you've posted seem to be about his wife Linda (in my reading anyway), Nitin seems to think the song's about his ex.

 Nitin:

“Paul has done a track about how he feels about Heather and what was going on with the paparazzi because no one has heard his side of it at all - so this will be the first time anyone hears a song relating to that subject,”

 
Could be a mix-up between tracks. Although there's no info yet, McCartney has said that he was working on a new Fireman album and Nitin has said that he was remixing a track for him. Presumably the track on Nitin's forthcoming album is another item.

 

Any more details on what you've heard in terms of style, instruments etc?

Hmmm... yes.... slightly more 'info' in them there lyrics than I feel comfortable reading about....

No one with half a brain or an iota of scruples is really interested in the kind of b-----ks churned out by the media.  I really would've thought that the mighty Macca would've stuck two fingers up to the press  and told them to print what the hell they liked, not write a song to express his side of things....he really doesn't have to justify anything to anyone, least of all the kind of pleb that either writes that trot or reads it.

And..... wait a minute, this isn't the first collaboration to result in a song about a broken relationship, is it.... What about that Will chap?  I bet he was all excited and thinking "I'm not going to dwell on the old heartache, I'm going to write something upbeat and happy and....."..... What was it called? "Home"?  How achingly sad was that song??? Crikey Nitin, you really know how to cheer people up!!!!

Buga, the trouble is - people do believe it, or at least want to read about it - otherwise the media wouldn't have written about it in the first time.  And even if one party is more to blame, it is never all one sided.  It's better not to read any of it though, because you will never know what really happened.  And you wouldn't have wanted to be a fly on the wall either.

Some of the most beautiful songs are written on sad subjects.  Not that I believe that there is ever only one love for you - but that's another issue.  The final song on Imogen Heap's album feels as if it has come out of wrenching misery.

I  might be wrong, but I think the words to "Home" can be viewed at a different levels.  It could be about a broken relationship, but I often think about it in terms of identity and belonging, so the lyrics could just as easily be about identity and belonging to a group, or being shunned by other groups.  Then there is the sense of home in an eschatalogical terms -  but maybe it is too late to start discussing theology at this time of night.

If the lyrics to the new songs are accurate, "her departed face" and "memories of another life" suggest to me that the song's about (or partly about) Linda also.

Streuth! How long is Nitin gonna keep us waiting?

Actually, I don't care as I smell another masterpiece in the cauldron and he can cook it til it's done!

 

Rumour mill: I have heard (but not yet read) that the as-yet-unannounced "International Superstar" who's joining Paul McCartney at the Liverpool Sound gig on 1st June may be NS!

 

I know that everywhere else is saying it's Ringo but the thing is that Paul's MPL Tours company are actually fronting up the cash for the whole gig (projected loss already accepted) and Macca's only official word on things is that it's 'up in the air'.

This would be ultra-cool but I'm wondering if Nitin's projected whereabouts that we know of on June 1st rule it out? 

 We know also that McCartney's new 'Fireman' project is hitting this summer and that Nitin is onboard on at least a remix capacity so got a feeling there's gonna be some synchronisation on releases to give both some promotional wellie.

 
BTW Although the new Macca album is notionally a 'Fireman' project, it's quite likely that it may be unattributed and sneak out as with the first two in 1993 and 1998. So keep your eyes and ears peeled.

I'm gonna be trying to squeeze some info out of Bobby Friction. I'll keep you posted.
 

Just to add...it's now been announced that the 'international superstar' for Liverpool Sound is Dave Grohl, effectively killing Nitin rumour flat.

However, Nitin is confirmed as attending Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts' graduation ceremonies on July 25 where McCartney will confer honours on him, producer Trevor Horn, songwriter Cathy Dennis, music business lawyer Ann Harrison, choreographer Lea Anderson, and theatre designer Richard Hudson.

Rhian, I don't know any more than you - although I keep checking from time to time.  My hunch is the same as yours, but that is all that it is - a hunch.  It used to be a woman's prerogative to keep men waiting, but to mix the metaphors, the boot is on the other foot.  oh dear, that last phrase will be enough to start Buga off again - wondering how many feet I've got!
