    THE BEST OF BRITISH!!!

A few months ago, I flicked the telly on to find our man on breakfast tv, desperately attempting to get a word in. The topic of conversation was the alleged erosion of "Britishness" at the Proms. Nitin's was an argument doomed to fail, not that he stood a cat in hell's chance of voicing it. Unsurprisingly, those prattling daytime presenters could not even grasp the very simple point that Nitin was attempting to make - that, contrary to their fears, if the Proms continued to include an increasingly diverse selection of artists and composers, it would actually BEGIN to reflect British Society. Not wanting to overwhelm them, he tried to put his point across as simply as he could by mentioning how pleased he was when the Shankars were invited to participate.  It whistled right over their heads or at least, if anything, reaffirmed their conviction that the Proms was less British than it has ever been!  Undeterred, he simplified his argument further, exclaiming, "BUT I'M BRITISH!!!" and was promptly ignored... a week later, they were obsessing over sweaters knitted out of doghair....

Another great event in Britain's cultural calendar is taking place this Sunday, in East London.

It's the Love Music Hate Racism Carnival and, unlike the Proms, it's free, it's accessable(!) and certainly more representative of the British populous (although, it does look to be on par with the Proms when it comes to female representation!!!). What's more, the line up includes just a few names that might sound familiar to Sawhney camp followers... Nathan 'Flutebox' Lee, Natascha Eleonore and...Get Cape.Wear Cape.Fly!!!!  Check out the whole event on the website link below and maybe I will see you there...

Thanks for that Rosemary. Did you spot the guys I call "The Two Elvis's" grooving away?  I pointed them out to you at the Dutch Culture Festival - they pop up everywhere!

Yes, Buga, though I wouldn't have spotted them on tv if you hadn't mentioned it.

Enjoy the Mela, I'm having an African music month at the moment - saw Toumane Diabate last week, Tinariwen next week, and probably Seckou Keita at Hay.  I've tried to see someone at Hay ever year since going up there a few years ago to see Nitin.  Downside is having to drive back through the Brecon Beacons late at night.

And the plural of Elvis is....

Went back to Victoria Park again for the Paradise Gardens Festival and guess who was there.... yes, the two Elvis's... or should that be "Elvisses" or, as has been suggested to me "Elvi" ..... what IS the correct word for the plural of Elvis (please don't come up with "There's only one Elvis!" either - heard it already!)? Anyway, it was something of an occasion for them as they were invited to dance on stage - what a sight!!

Re: And the plural of Elvis is....

..Elvii, according to Wikipedia.  Grammatically it should be Elves, but this usage has been overlooked.  Sadly Sad the Guardian Style guide, that arbiter of grammar and expression, is silent on this matter.

Re: And the plural of Elvis is....

Elvii? Really? Wait a minute, isn't Wikipedia maintained by, well, anyone? How do I know you haven't made "Elvii" up and submitted it yourself?  It sounds like it came out of the RHS Plantfinder!!!  (No, you are not seeing things, the emoticons are still all very, very grey....however, right click, copy and paste the emoticon button and this is what you get - GLORIOUS emoticon colour!)  Elves doesn't sound plausible though.  These guys are more medallion and flares than red, pointy hat and green doublet and hose.... or am I thinking of Pixies......

Anyway, actually, there's another LMHR event coming up on the 21st June - it's the National March & Parade Against Fascism and Racism so I'll be hot-footing it down to Tooley Street at midday to check out the floats. Usually I have gone out of my way to avoid parades, ever since I suffered the traumatising childhood experience of having been within hearing distance of the kazoo bands (and there were several since my neighbourhood was so impoverished they couldn't afford any instruments... but STILL insisted on parading nonetheless!) but, I think that we can be quietly confident there'll be no kazoo-players at this event...not that I'm being a music fascist or anything..... (I would add a blushing emoticon at this point but....well, see for yourself. Embarrassed It looks ill!!!)

Thanks for your suggestions, Rosemary.  I suspect that Beverly's too giddy with excitement to ponder such questions at present, bless!  Will you get to meet the man Beverly, or at least get onto his guestlists while he's over?  A little bit of advice from your aunty Buga - take a bucket with you. Great for hiding under if you're bashful and just perfect for catching drool if your not.....Enjoy!

Re: And the plural of Elvis is....

Ahh well Buga, but I couldn't find anything better than Wikipedia.  I'm hardly going to ring up the Telegraph  or ring up the British Library in the style of The Apprentice television programme.  And I haven't seen my new gig buddy this week to ask her (she's an English lecturer).  I even resorted to books (!) but there isn't anything in Fowlers Modern English Usage either.

Thanks for the tip on the emoticons Smile');" title="Smile - Smile"> - except I got a whole string of stuff as well as the smiley.  We have glorious technicolour (bit like the cinemascope size talk I did to the media students this week).

Re: And the plural of Elvis is....

... They're looking rather grey, Rosemary, but at least they're not green and, actually, that reminds me - yesterday was the annual mass-gathering of the Stokey chin-strokers and judging by the fence to fence sea of carrierbags, empty bottles, beer cans etc, strewn liberally across the park, it's safe to assume that they're not green either. So much for all those eco-friendly shops! Perhaps the property developer who flattened the old Vortex venue and replaced it with a mock-Victorian Nando's eatery, looked beyond that pseudo, eco-conscious veneer and saw what really lurks beneath!
