A screening of 2003's "Twelfth Night", scored by Nitin, was shown the past 2 nights as part of the Luminato festival here in Toronto.
Nitin appeared, along with director Tim Supple, who is directing "A Midsummer's Night Dream" at the festival, for a short Q & A after the screening last night. They renewed acquaintances after all those years.
The movie, which starred Parminder Nagra, of "Bend it Like Beckham" and the new "Batman" film, is a modern day multicultural version of Shakespeare's play. It was quite good. I guess starting with the Bard's words would help any film! Shakespeare kills me with his misdirections, mischief & humour.
Both Nitin & Tim spoke about the moment frozen in time that defines a movie, and how theatre & music are different in that performances can change & evolve over time. Nitin said that, now, after hearing his music choices again he may have done them differently.
The Indian based themes played well with this production, setting great moods.
The song "Waiting ( O Mistress Mine )" from HUMAN was featured in the movie, sung by Zubin Varla, who played the role of Feste, the fool. It was perfect for the movie, working as well on the screen as it does from your speakers. And again, having Shakespeare as your lyricist...well how can you go wrong!
Nitin talked about writing music for a dance production. I didn't catch the name and was hoping you could help me with this.
I'm looking forward to Friday night's A THROW OF DICE and Saturday's club night. Hope you can make it out to these shows. 1 of a kind nights for Toronto!
