Have you tried their website, www.oi-va-voi.com ? I'm not a big fan of theirs and it's been a few years since I last saw them but, am I right in remembering that they had a fiddle with a brass horn fitted to it (like a smaller version of the horn on an old gramophone?)..... or (worryingly) have I just imagined that? If you get a chance to hear a fella called Dave Swarbrick play, grab it without hesitation. He plays British folk music but is undoubtedly one of the finest fiddlers around.

Re: anyone know the name of Oi Va Voi's violinist?

Thanks! Clicked link and really enjoyed the samples. Have you heard Mukka? Or Romani Rad? We are really blessed for music! Sophie Solomon's 'sound' also reminds me of two old favourites, Marta Sebestyen's Muzsikas (Hungary) and wicked jazzer, Ivo Papasov (& his Bulgarian Wedding Band) - his first album, "Orpheus Rising" is one of my most cherished pieces of vinyl!!!

Oh, and I'm relieved to say that the violin contraption EXISTS!!! (I had to find out!!!!) It's called a Violophone or Violinophone and if you really want to see what I was on about, I've included a link and basically, the girl in the picture is playing one similar to the model I saw. The gig where I saw it was just over 4 years ago so, if anyone was at YaD's Oi-Va-Voi/ Adbelkader Saadoun gig at Cargo, the night after the legendary TU gig.... YOU DIDN'T IMAGINE IT EITHER!!!!

If the following links work then I hope they'll prove useful!

info about Romani Rad can be found here:

    and samples here:

www.audiolicense.net (enter Romani Rad in "search for music" for sounds.)

    info about Ivo Papasov:

    ....and that pesky contraption....

Re: anyone know the name of Oi Va Voi's violinist?

Certainly is, eh! My eyes were on stalks on the night that I saw it as it was also the first time I saw a qaraqeb. However, nothing could've prepared me for going to see Vikku perform - the instrument he plays is a Ghatam, an earthenware pot similar in shape to a bayan (the larger of the two drums in a tabla set) but without a skin. On that particular night, I believe that the shockwave caused by my jaw hitting the floor in sheer disbelief, was felt as far away as Manchester!

Anyway, for you, FOR YOU Sawhorse, I have actually, ACTUALLY joined Ms. Solomon's mailing list (you know, I've never joined his lordship's mailing list - pointless really - kept more up to date by this forum!!!). If I get lucky, you can have the tickets, and get to meet the lovely Sophie, post-gig and ...... Sawhorse?.....SAWHORSE?????? ........Oh dear.........

Re: anyone know the name of Oi Va Voi's violinist?

Yes, well, thank you Sawhorse. I wouldn't go as far as saying I was outrageously kind... notoriously unlucky, on the other hand...

Oh no, wait! I once won a dog basket in a school raffle years back - one of those wicker, travelling things. Huge thing it was and, although I did wonder what the hell I would do with it, living in a house riddled with cats, it turned out to be an unusually useful refuge for a painfully shy adolescent.

Re: anyone know the name of Oi Va Voi's violinist?

Wow!!!!!!!!! How excited are you!!! When is that gig again? February sometime? Good grief Sawhorse, by the time it comes around, you're going to need sedating with a cricket bat or something!!! Perhaps you could channel all that energy into making yourself a Sophie Solomon Advent Calendar? I'm sure that it's never been done.

I too have succumbed to temptation - got tickets to see the multi-faceted wonderboy perform his soundtrack to that "Prapancha Pash" film (ANYTHING to hear the LSO playing something other than Mahler!!!!!). Can't help wondering if he'll rise out of a hole in the middle of the stage floor, pounding away on an ancient Wurlitzer....... Anyway, that's ages from now - plenty of time to make popcorn and stock up on hankies!!!

Meanwhile, you must report back on your evening of aural delights (how many weeks/hours/nanoseconds away is it? ), courtesy of lovely Ms Solomon .....but until then, think calm thoughts Sawhorse, think c-a-l-m thoughts .......
