    Philtre - my thoughts

I really do love Nitin Sawhney. Every album he's done has been different yet I feel that his latest is his best 'album' but least interesting 'music'. None of the songs make my blood surge or nerves tingle. It doesn't touch me in the way that previous albums have. The music feels flat and uninspired yet the songs are more consistent and easier to listen to. Certainly more accessible. People talk of The Search but it pales into insignificance when compared to Breathing Light. None of the songs have the emotion of Immgrant or the beauty of Nadia. This is easy uninspired listening and by anyone elses standard I would say it's very good, but Nitin, I expect and demand better. Perhaps the energy is deflected into your DJing albums but please rediscover your touch soon. It's a good album but good is not enough when the music is by Nitin Sawhney!!!!!!!

    Poll

Does Philtre bring up emotions in the way that previous Nitin albums could?
    • Yes, it's as good if not better in making me emote (70%)
    • No, the album's alright but it doesn't have the sme depth as Beyond Skin, Prophesy or even Human (30%)
    • Total Votes: 10

    Re: Philtre - my thoughts

Heh, you've given him a lot to live up to, selecting Immigrant, Nadia and Breathing Light (coincidentally my 3 favourite Nitin tracks too) to compare his work against.

For me, Beyond Skin was an absolutely perfect album (or at least very close).

It was also the first one I bought (after hearing Immigrant on a compilation CD, I just had to get the album) and at first, I was disappointed to find other albums didn't share Beyond Skin's feel.

But for me, that's what Nitin's about - creating new and varied music from diverse influences, producing equally diverse music himself, and it's only because of that that he produced those incredible songs you listed.

So as change and originality is inherent to Nitin's work, we can't expect him to follow the vein of whatever favourites we have from his previous work. It just wouldn't be Nitin Sawhney.

    Re: Philtre - my thoughts

I must say Philtre took a number of listenings and time to grow on me. (like particular friends and mould) It took me a while to work out where Nitin was trying to take us. I felt like I was being challenged to look upon a bigger vista where conditioned boundaries dissapated. It was different and not as familiar or as individualistic as I have enjoyed in his work thus far. It did however expand my sense of the world making me think more in terms of "us" than "I". Anything that makes my heart bigger is kind of useful, I figure. Philtre means healing potion right? well the taste was different but it was good for me....
